Ghana’s mobile market grew by 1.19 percent in December 2018 to a total of 40.934 million voice subscriptions, according to the latest report from the National Communications Authority.

That is equal to a market penetration of 138.88 percent.

MTN remained market leader with a share of 49.08 percent, after growing its base by 1.68 percent in the month to 20.093 million. AirtelTigo was in second place with 10.289 million customers, down 0.51 percent from November and good for a market share of 25.14 percent. Vodafone grew its base by 2.15 percent in the month to 9.813 million and increased its share to 23.97 percent. Glo dropped by 0.81 percent to 739,352 customers, for a share of 1.81 percent.

Ghana had over 1.1 million 4G subscribers at year-end, more than double the number at the start of the year, due mainly to expansion at MTN. MTN accounted for nearly 93 percent of the subscribers, while Surfline had just under 5 percent, or 55,000 4G subscribers.

In the 2G/3G mobile data market, MTN finished the year with over 55 million customers and more than 59 percent of the market. AirtelTigo had over 6 million data customers and a 23.21 percent share, and Vodafone took just over 16 percent of the market with 4.2 million data customers.
